Seating Chart Generator

Classroom seating chart maker

Paste your class list, choose rows, pairs, pods or a U-shape, and get a random classroom seating chart. Keep chosen students in the front row and chosen pairs apart, click two students to swap them, then print it with names. Free, no sign-up, and the list never leaves your computer.

Click one student, then another, to swap them.

How to make a classroom seating chart

  1. Paste the class list. Copy the name column from your gradebook or a spreadsheet and paste it in. Duplicate names are dropped.
  2. Pick the layout that matches the room. For rows and pairs, set how many desks fit across; the number of rows follows from the class size.
  3. Add the rules. Students who need the front row go in the Front row box; pairs who shouldn't sit together go in Keep apart, one pair per line.
  4. Shuffle until you like it, swap any two students by clicking them, and print. A–Z seats the class alphabetically by last name, which helps in the first weeks while you learn names.

Printing the chart

Print puts the chart on its own page with the title you typed, names in every desk and the front of the room marked. Tick Teacher's view first if you want the board at the bottom, the way you see the room from your desk. Print blank gives the same desk plan with empty desks, a classroom seating chart template to fill in by hand or keep for a substitute.

Your students' names stay on your computer

The class list is kept in your browser's local storage so the chart is there when you come back. It is never uploaded, there is no account, and nothing is shared with us or anyone else. On a shared computer, clear the class list box when you're done.

FAQ

Is this classroom seating chart maker free?

Yes, including printing the chart with names. There is no account and no limit on classes.

Where is my class list stored?

Only in your own browser, so the chart is still there next time you open the page on the same computer. Nothing is sent to a server. Clear the roster box to remove it.

Can I keep two students apart?

Yes. Put each pair on its own line in the Keep apart box. They won't share a desk pair or a pod, or sit next to each other in a row.

Can I make a blank seating chart template?

Yes. Set the layout and number of desks, then press Print blank. You get the desk plan with empty desks to fill in by hand.

Does it work on a Chromebook?

Yes. It runs in any up-to-date browser, Chrome on a Chromebook included.
